Today, the Canadian Medical Cannabis Council released a statement on the Canadian government's proposed 10% excise tax on medical cannabis:
"We thank the government for their commitment to providing accessible medical cannabis to patients in Canada. The Canadian Medical Cannabis Council is committed to protecting the rights of patients in need of safe, accessible and affordable medical cannabis across the country.
"Therefore, we strongly oppose extending the proposed 10% excise tax on recreational cannabis to medical cannabis, thereby increasing the cost to critically and chronically ill Canadians who benefit from its use, many of whom are on fixed income and already struggling to cover the cost of medical cannabis.
"Moreover, we continue to encourage the federal government to move to zero-rate medical cannabis in the 2018 budget thereby treating like all other prescription medications in Canada, and as a precursor to increased private and public insurance coverage. "
